Project description:

This project rethinks about the relationship among memories, space and people. It compares how people memorise the same shared place differently and addresses the question “How can people record and experience space-related memory digitally”.

It asks the space to be viewed as more than a physical container, but a live narrator;

It brings the space to life by connecting it with varied memories across time. It supports emotional needs by allowing people to leave digital marks in the space over time; People can record and leave memories behind, and experience these memories again when they are back to the same spot. It also connects the people who are using the same space together by shared cross-time memories, especially in the space where people are changing periodically.

Concept video

Before creating the film, I designed the storyboards as outlines and tested it with three people. I divided the film into introduction, how it works and conclusion, and explained the function in “My Memory Mode” and “Explore Mode” respectively. To show the augmented reality effects in the film, I used digital elements in the physical environment instead of showing the digital screens.

For the voice-over, I borrowed the shortgun microphone and the recorder from college and asked my roommate to help with the voice.

Research model making

I used a model to show my outcomes of the research. I used the plan drawing of the space as the base. I selected quotes from the interviews and put them in the corresponding areas where the memories occurred. I used the same classifying colours as in the app design to specify the memory elements. By this, I tried to show the richness of the memories and how they existed in different corners. It also created a scenario of my design.

However, I did not put the whole model in the exhibition space because it is too big. I only exhibited some parts of the model.

Reflection

There are several limitations of the project. One is that due to the limitation of time, I only conducted the research in one space to figure out the elements that people will use to shape space-related memories. But the results may differ according to different types of spaces. Another one is that since augmented reality cloud is still a new technology, I am unsure about the final achieved version and thus not able to see how it works. Finally, although I redefined memory elements into “pictures, stories and other senses” from the research, users still have to use traditional digital forms to describe those due to the limited technologies on mobiles.

The application currently is designed for spaces in schools, but there is potential for applying the design into other spaces, such as homes. It can be used for parents to record kids’ memories, and share the important moments with the other one, for example. In this case, sharing and exploring should become the main functions. This can be a possible future direction.
